Padma Shri Bharat Bhushan Tyagi

Padma Shri Bharat Bhushan Tyagi is an Indian farmer, educator and trainer from Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, who was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India in 2019. He is also a recipient of the Progressive Farmer Award by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. He organises weekly training for farmers at Bulandshahr and has trained over 80,000 farmers.

A science graduate from Delhi University. he has also worked closely with government associations like the National Centre of Organic Farming, the International Competence Centre for Organic Agriculture (ICCOA), the Ministry of Agriculture (India), the AFC, and the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development.

A True Son of the Soil

Padma Shri Bharat Bhushan Tyagi is an Indian farmer, educator and trainer from Beehta Village, Bulandshahr District, Uttar Pradesh, who was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India in 2019. He is also a recipient of the Progressive Farmer Award by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

Padma Shri Bharat Bhushan Tyagi lives in Beehta village in Bulandshahr district, just 80 km from Delhi, which is in the heartland of the Green Revolution in India had made his mark across the country due to organic farming. His father insisted that he come back to the village after earning a BSc degree from Delhi University. He began farming in 1975 using Green Revolution techniques learnt from scientists at the research centre nearby. Within a decade, he was disillusioned and started looking for alternatives.

Contribution

It took another decade for him to develop an alternative understanding of farming based on the ideas of the mystic-philosopher Shri Agrahar Nagraj. These ideas have been implemented on his farm over the last two decades, which has also been formally associated with the National Centre for Organic Farming, Ghaziabad.

He has shared his alternative world view with many other farmers over the years and even been interviewed on national television. He motivates farmers by conducting farmers’ workshops for organic farming in surrounding districts as well as other states and is said to have trained more than 80,000 farmers to date and still continues doing so. Uttar Pradesh and Central Government have honoured him many times for his work.

He has closely worked with government associations like the National Centre of Organic Farming, International Competence Centre for Organic Agriculture (ICCOA), Ministry of Agriculture (India), AFC, and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development.

Through his success in Western Uttar Pradesh, he has shown that organic farming can become a people’s movement. With numerous accolades for his contributions to agriculture, Shri Tyagi is a role model for today’s generation. His achievements have inspired youth to take up agriculture as a profession.
